Bespoke Clothing In 30 Minutes

The future of clothing manufacturing is very small scale, and very personal. Based on your exact dimensions, you can have custom designed clothing tailored precisely to your. The entire process - from coloring, cutting and sewing - takes 30 minutes.

(Purchase Activated Manufacturing)

This is the future of clothing manufacturing envisioned by Cal Poly Pomona’s apparel merchandising and management department and a group of international businesses...

The new color infusion method, which works on synthetic materials currently and which VIMA is planning to expand to cotton and wool, does not require any water or chemicals. This technique infuses a permanent color that can even be bleached safely.

After the color infusion, an optical cutter cuts the cloth into the various parts to be sewn together. The entire manufacturing process is so quick that clothes can be ready in 30 minutes.

The Rancho Cucamonga factory is geared for wholesale production or direct-to-consumer shipping. But the set-up is small enough that it can fit into the back of a retail store: customers could walk into a clothing shop and walk out with a customized outfit in less than an hour.

This seems to be exactly what Robert Heinlein had in mind in his 1941 novel Methuselah's Children. On the run from the authorities, Lazaras Long needed a change of clothing - right now.

He sat himself down in a sales cubicle and dialed the code number for kilts. He let the pictures of cloth designs flicker past his eyes while he let the persuasive voice of the catalog drone on until a pattern showed up which was distinctly unmilitary and not blue, whereupon he arrested the display and punched the combination for his size.

The plain blue uniform kilt he stuffed in the refuse hopper of the sales cubicle and left, nattily and somewhat flamboyantly attired.

As I recall, it took about the time needed to have a smoke for the clothing to be ready.
