SHEPHERD-MIL, A Birdlike Soaring UAV
SHEPHERD-MIL is a birdlike UAV which mimics birds in both appearance and soaring and gliding capability.

This UAV is characterized by the glide-ratio and noiseless motor that make it invisible, silent and unobtrusive in sensitive missions. SHEPHERD-MIL was initially developed as a bird strike avoidance system, and currently is used in situations where the safety and protection are key.SHEPHERD-MIL is equipped with cameras and geolocation software. The system is especially suitable for border surveillance missions, firefighting, and anti-drug trafficking operations amongst others.
SF readers recall the tracer-bird from Roger Zelazny's 1980 novel Changeling, the robot bird from Philip E. High's 1968 novel Invader on My Back and little bird from Greg Bear's 2003 novel Darwin's Children.
I also liked the earliest reference I know about, the metal bird from Philip K. Dick's 1960 nvoel Vulcan's Hammer., even though the metal birds are not really birdlike in appearance.
