Digital Press Corps Gadget Freaks
The New York Times today published a story on how wireless laptops and digital tape recorders and other high tech gadgets are quickening the pace of news reporting.
"... a deadline every minute, once the preserve of the wire services, is now the motto for most of the press corps... Campaign reporters, like war correspondents, are not necessarily gadget geeks. But the rapacious 24-hour news cycle has forced them onto the cutting edge to do their jobs better."
One reporter is shown with the forty pounds of assorted stuff, including a notebook pc, video camera, cell phone, beeper, and more. Makes you long for the days when you just needed a press pass, a notebook and a pencil...
Fans of John Varley may remember the reporters in his 1984 novel Steel Beach, in which he paints a prescient picture of reporters out-teching each other. They use something called a handwriter, a text input device implanted in their skins.
