Self-Cleaning SilverSport Gym Gear Uses Nanosilver

SilverSport has come out with a line of special fitness gear that makes exercise as clean as possible. The products, like the mat shown below, have what the company calls Silver Clean Zone which uses nanosilver particles, which, according to the company, are "naturally anti-microbial".

( SilverSport Hot Fitness SilverMat™ )

Hall of Fame football player Franco Harris and consumer product expert Thomas Davis founded SilverSport with one goal in mind: to make exercise as clean as possible. The two saw a need in the market after hearing the multitude of stories about the prevalence of germs in fitness environments, such as gyms and yoga classes, and even when working out at home. SilverSport is the cutting edge solution to creating a clean work out.

Every SilverSport product employs Terra Silver to keep its surface clean. Using state of the art nanotechnology, Terra Silver releases silver ions which bind to and naturally eliminate odor-causing bacteria, without using harsh chemicals. The silver we use is EPA registered and OEKO-TEX™ approved.

  • Silver Towel™ – Made using sustainable materials, SilverSport towels are amazingly soft, highly absorbent and naturally bacteria resistant.
  • SilverSport Hot Fitness SilverMat™ – Featuring an antimicrobial, anti-slip textured surface, the SilverMat is quickly becoming a must-have product for hot yoga enthusiasts.
  • SilverShaper ™– No ordinary Pilates roller, the SilverShaper increases circulation and temporarily reduces the appearance of cellulite, while decreasing the user’s risk of bacterial infection.
  • Prenatal Fit Kit – Provides the extra support necessary for comfortable workouts in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters.

The basic idea is that the material is activated by moisture (i.e., sweat); tiny nanosilver particles bind to the surface to kill bacteria. The towel described above therefore would not need to be washed - not for odor, anyway.

Fans of Neal Stephenson's classic 1995 novel The Diamond Age recall the self-cleaning fabrics used by respectable gentlemen and ladies:

Most gentlemen's and ladies' gloves nowadays were constructed of infinitesimal fabricules that knew how to eject dirt; you could thrust your gloved hand into mud, and it would be white a few seconds later.
