Targeted Audio Ads On Your Cell Phone
TargetSpot is working to bring targeted mobile audio advertisements to mobile radio users. The ads will play during Slacker music streams on various smartphone platforms, including the iPhone, Android and BlackBerry handsets.
Want to offer Blackberry owners free appetizers at your bar if they bring along three coworkers? Insert an ad during their commute, gym or lunchbreak listening. Slacker and Targetspot won’t be the only ones trying this concept; mobile app developers have already experimented with targeted mobile display ads, and any app that works better with headphones would be a potential candidate.
This development does not surprise those of us who grew up in the era of the transistor radio; the modern cell phone is a radio, after all.
Science fiction writer J.G. Ballard envisaged cell phones with free services - in exchange for listening to advertisements; read more about Ballard's free telephone calls in his 1963 story The Subliminal Man.

Audio advertisements, which interrupt the free version of the service every so often with a 30-second spot, are partly responsible for Pandora’s success. But mobile offers a potentially more significant opportunity for advertisers as interactive radio migrates to the cellphone in addition to the computer.
