3D Cat Scan Display With Non-Contact Control

A 3D CAT scan image display with a non-contact control system allows physicians to view and manipulate medical images without touching anything. This non-contact system is perfect for use in operating rooms, where maintaining a sterile work environment is essential.

(3D CAT scan with non-contact image control)

Here's how the press release describes the scene:

The physician leans back in a chair and studies the three-dimensional image floating before his eyes. After a little reflection, he raises a finger and points at a virtual button, likewise floating in the air. At the physician’s command, the CAT scan image rotates from right to left or up and down – precisely following the movement of his finger. In this way, he can easily detect any irregularities in the tissue structure. With another gesture, he can click on to the next image. Later, in the operating room, the surgeon can continue to refer to the scanner images. Using gesture control to rotate the images, he can look at the scan of the patient’s organs from the same perspective as he sees them on the operating table. There is no risk of contaminating his sterile gloves, because there is no mouse or keyboard involved.

The system makes use of two cameras installed above the display. These cameras look for finger movement; each sees the finger from a different angle, and software identifies its position in space. A third camera in the frame of the display scans the user's face and eyes. The display software looks at the inclination of the user's head and direction of eye focus and then generates an image appropriate for that view.

This system should be commercially available in the coming year.

Looking at this system, I can't help but think that this would be just the display to use with a bio-inkjet printer that could actually print out replacement parts based on what was displayed (or not seen) on the 3D CAT scan image.
