Comments on Martians Could Kill Life On Earth, Says Scientist
A prominent UK scientist apparently believes that it is possible that Martian water harbors life - maybe dangerous life. (Read
the complete story)
"If Dr. Murray had been a bit more familiar with recent science fiction, he would have called it a 'Species II' situation. In that 1998 sequel to the original 1996 film, an alien life form oozed out of a Martian rock sample taken aboard a returning spacecraft. "
(Bill Christensen 12/12/2006 7:50:30 PM) |
"Dr. Murray might want to start worrying early - looks like there are some people who think the Martian microbes have already made their way here!

"Martian germs would not be a threat to us. In order for a microorganism to survive in an environment (such as on Earth, or in the human body) it has to be adapted to that environment. Martian microorganisms would not be suited to live and feed in the human body because the "environment" is utterly foreign and they have not co-evolved to find and exploit weaknesses of the human body. They could not kill us for the same reason we don't get Dutch Elm Disease and trees don't catch colds. "

"hopefully trees, wheat or fish won't get martian disease. It could mean nuicance, famine or economic problem"

"I co-sign w/Kevin, how ridiculous. A lot of these scientists blow things WAAAYYY out of porportion from the start, just to grab a headline...SURELY, HOPEFULLY :-? they've thought of this, what Kevin said...And I, personally, don't even think that the bacteria would survive here long enough to be studied..."
