Comments on Chinese Military Takes Page From NASA Apollo Program
NASA actually used this same technique in the 1960's to practice for the Apollo missions. (Read
the complete story)
"Exactly where in Arizona is the scale model of the Sea of Tranquility landing site? I've been googeling several times with a host of keywords but never seem to find any details. Links appreciated."

"Good question. I can't seem to find references to the exact location either. There are volcanic lava fields in Arizona, but I can't find any NASA references online. In the documentary film referenced in the article, they show contemporary footage of NASA geologists talking at the location. They also show archival footage that is clearly from the 1960's of the explosions that created the 'craters'. I've written to NASA's history division to see if I can get an answer."

"Thank you, will be interesting to see the reply. Always found it a bit odd that the place hasn't become an attraction of sorts."

"Here's a page that seems relevant:
http://astrogeology.usgs.gov/About/AstroHistory/astronauts.html
A crater field was created at Cinder Lake(s) near Flagstaff. The craters in the picture on that page don't seem to match with the picture above, though.
Here's another page:
http://pirlwww.lpl.arizona.edu/~jscotti/cinderlake.html
According to that site, it doesn't seem like anything is being done to preserve the area - it's a 4x4 and ATV haven now."

"Thank you very much! :)"
