Comments on Active Denial System Has Researchers Worried
The 'Sheriff' Active Denial System (ADS), due to be implemented in Iraq by 2006, has some scientists and researchers expressing concerns. (Read the complete story)

"More concern goes to the case in which a person is *forced* to be in front of the ray. Recent events show that torture is now acceptable for certain government entities. This would add a new *tool* for that purpose."
(Kolya 8/4/2005 10:40:57 AM)
"what would happen if a person wrapped aluminum screen wire mesh from head to toe & approached the emitter? How about driving a copper rod into the ground & attaching the end of a roll of magnet wire to it & throwing the roll of wire & the emitter?"
(steve 8/20/2005 3:36:46 AM)
"I meant to say"throw the roll of wire at the emitter". Any enemy would readily use a USA made or improvised HARM missile against such a device. If a ADS sys.is deployed, they will easily defeat it. They're on the 'net now;another one of our leaders inventions that's now biting our ankles"
(steve 8/20/2005 3:45:15 AM)
"Whatever it's problems, it's a damn sight better than firing into the crowd."
( 8/28/2005 5:08:46 PM)
"The army's test subjects had to remove rings, beltbuckles and watches to prevent severe burns. Nobody would ever be carrying small metallic disks in their pockets now, would they? Save your garbage can lids kids....makes a nice REFLECTOR"
( 8/29/2005 2:12:04 PM)
"There is always resistance to the development of new technologies. It amazes me that Some Scientist would afraid of non-leathal weapons technology, while scoffing at fears regarding our tinkering with the Human Genome. In my opinion, the 'What If's of Human Cloning are a far more grave concern. "
(Realist 8/30/2005 4:55:27 PM)
"now thats scarey New World Order...here we come"
(jillh10 9/4/2005 9:18:41 AM)
"The feds (U.S. Secret Service protective division) have used the ADT weapon on me without my consent for years (since 1996) and it DOES cause permanent and semi-permanent damage and the feds DO HAVE & INDISCRIMINATELY USE one that burns the skin. For more info you can contact me at: Mr. D. Friedman 1125 Third Street Napa, CA 94559"
(D. Friedman 12/7/2005 7:48:11 PM)
"can it turn off?"
(derick 1/17/2006 11:11:52 AM)
"Yeah, but what if you get such a huge unruly crowd and they fire that thing and people trample other people to death trying to get away from it? Scores of people have been trampled to death trying to get away from fires in confined areas in the past - a scenario like that ought to be of more concern than the transient effects of the device itself."
(Schrecken 7/11/2006 8:26:05 PM)
"It's just a matter of time before ADT/ADS is deployed on protestors and others engaged in civil disobedience. Remember the WTO riots."
(Elmer Fudd 9/15/2006 8:30:09 AM)
"Here's a news bulletin for you:
The United States should test nonlethal weapons it has developed for crowd control or police actions at home before using them for military purposes overseas, Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne said on Sept. 12, 2006.
"We need to start using that here in the United States on Americans," Wynne told reporters. "If we’re not willing to use it here against our fellow citizens, we should not be willing to use it in a wartime situation."
From U.S. Should Test Non-Lethal Weapons at Home First: Official "
(Bill 9/15/2006 11:17:59 AM)
"The ADS does not "reflect", nor does metal enhance the effects. Those individuals were told to remove the items because they were still "testing" the parameters. The ADS is a safe and effective weapon. Oh yeah by the way, we HAVE been using it on Americans! Who do you think we have been testing it on (all volunteers by the way!). Trust me, this weapon is better suited to use against an adversary than resorting to lethal weaponry. No residual effects, and it increases the satndoff distance between our forces and an adversary. It cannot kill or maim, and does not control anyone. It is only a repelling effect by using an intense heating sensation. You people need to get the facts before you start to judge or spew thoughts about a subject which you have no idea about. "
( 11/22/2006 4:53:20 AM)
"I agree with the person who posted on 11/22/06 (anon.) - let's keep in mind our current weaponry, which have been proven to be lethal. Ask a gunshot victim their opinion on the risks of cornea burns vs. assault rifle wounds. While it can be argued that this weapon would be easily destroyed or disabled by technologically enabled foes, it is clearly not designed for use against well-armed opponents, but rather crowds with rocks, zombie-mobs etc. "
(Nate P 12/5/2006 11:40:52 AM)
"You missed the SF connection: This is basically Gene Roddenberry's "agonizer." Imagine the applications for torture... "
(eric 12/6/2006 7:17:07 AM)
"Torture? A spoon can be used for torture in the correct application. Seriously, do you not see the fact that this is designed to protect people from serious or grave harm! Was the same discussion had about tazers or OC pepper spray? Would you rather have a young troop with an itchy trigger finger operating a non-lethal weapon, or something which they can actually KILL something. Collateral damage would be minimum, and I only say minimum because there can be that situation that it does not repel its intended target so the troop has to resort to lethat force. This weapon is the future of defense!"
( 12/8/2006 8:18:27 AM)
"I for one, applaud this new technology. In fact, in a text based role-playing game I am in, I have started development for such a weapon. This story though, has shown me that there are some dangers to this system. Could it be possible that there is more information about what happens?"
(Havvy 1/28/2007 5:42:39 PM)
"I think its a real step foward that there trying to make non-leathal ways to stop riots... remeber a few months ago when thoughs chinese gas gernades exploded and injured dozens? And to all you who think its a new way to torture people... how many of you have been pistel wiped today? shot in the leg? the knee? how many of you have had a car battery straped to your genetals? EXACTLY!"
