Comments on Could Young Blood Stop Alzheimer's?
'...the blood gets so clogged with the poisons that the scavenging process doesn’t take place properly.'- Robert Heinlein, 1941. (Read
the complete story)
"There have been a number of historical characters, including at least 1 Pope, who tried to stay young by using the blood of young subjects."
(Peter Jacobs 10/18/2012 4:19:52 PM) |
"I didn't know that a Pope had tried it (Wikipedia says it was Innocent VIII, who tried it on his deathbed). The basis of the experiment really is magical thinking - I think it's called associative thinking or associative magic. The idea is that you try to transfer the essence of one thing (youthfulness) into another thing (old age) by putting the two items into close proximity. However, in this case, there is experimental validation that it can work. So, the question is, what exactly is the mechanism, assuming that the experiments were legitimate."
(Bill Christensen 10/18/2012 6:33:00 PM) |
"From what I read of the article, the reasoning is no more magical than any other transplant. The body allows some types of proteins to build up excessively, replacing it with blood containing less of them thus reduces harm to the body. There is a lack of specifics on what proteins cause damage, also no mention of youthfulness as a substance onto itself. Unless by "this case" you meant something other than the experiment described in the article?"
