"One of the first references in fiction that I can recall for your article "Did Giant Space Clouds Cause Mass Extinctions?" would be "The Poison Belt" (published in 1913) by the legenday Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes. In this tale Professor Challenger (the same character from "The Lost World") discovers that the Earth is passing through a poisonous cloud. It's as entertaining and original as most of Doyle's science fiction."
