This flying spherical robot is highly maneuverable, indoors and out. (Read the complete story)

"How about the interrogation sphere from Star Trek? Lord Vader loves this technology!"
( 6/17/2011 5:18:02 AM)
"That was the original Star Wars (episode IV). Speaking of which, I liked the Practice Ball Luke trained with."
(Dewtey 6/17/2011 5:22:33 AM)
"In Roger Zelazny's "This Moment of the Storm", police men (called "hell cops", from "helicopter") use flying robot drone "eyes" to monitor crime. Since the planet also has dangerous animals, the drones are also armed with six .45 calibre gun turrets."
(Winchell Chung 6/17/2011 8:00:18 AM)
"Yes, that's right, the IT-O Interrogator is a hovering robotic sphere from Star Wars.

"
(Bill Christensen 6/17/2011 9:43:51 AM)

"The 'practice ball' was called a 'seeker remote' in the Star Wars novel by George Lucas; follow the link to read a quote from the novel.

(Seeker remote from Star Wars)

In 1999, MIT engineering Professor David Miller showed Star Wars on the first day of class. During the scene where Luke Skywalker practices his light saber against a seeker remote, Miller stood up and said "I want you to build me some of those."

And they did. See Astronauts Test Star Wars Remote On Space Station for pix and info."
(Bill Christensen 6/17/2011 9:50:14 AM)

"Holy crap, Winchell, I found that item ... on my own site! See the entry for 'Eyes - Flying remote-operated surveillance drones'. And it appears that I'm not the only one who wasforgetful - the contributor of this item was one Winchell Chung!"
(Bill Christensen 6/17/2011 10:02:30 AM)
"Yes, both of us are getting forgetful!"
(Winchell Chung 6/17/2011 2:08:12 PM)
"Remember the guardians from Patrick McGoohan's "Prisoner" Series"
(Peter Jacobs 6/19/2011 5:04:59 PM)
"I do remember them; spherical guardians hover when needed, as seen in the picture below.

(The Rover guardian seeks its prey)
