Comments on Robots Need Realistic Skin!
Do you feel put off by the cold, impersonal touch of your robot? Help is on the way. (Read
the complete story)
"I think temperature would be at least as important as these three other attributes. Bill even characterizes bad robot skin as "cold." When it's 100 degrees out, you can pick up a plastic bottle of ketchup and the bottle feels like a little living animal. As far as fingerprints and little surface hairs go, watch out for the Uncanny Valley. Might be better to make an obviously fake hand that's the right size & shape, and moves just like a real hand, than an almost-convincing hand with a creepy aura of Wrongness."

"Good point. I haven't read any research to suggest warming robot skin (or prosthetic skin for human beings). It should be doable, though; circulate warm liquid beneath the surface of the 'skin'."

"A robot with human skin? Sounds like the Terminator to me!"
