Comments on White Box Robotics 912 - Hackable Home Robot
The White Box Robotics 912 is a rugged, all-purpose, hack-it-yourself robot - just like R2D2. (Read
the complete story)
"I think this kind of robots will have a future pretty soon. No only to clean up the house or play music. I think they can become more helpful in other matters, as more intelligence gets into them. The arm with a hand will be a major step as well. I'm anxious to have one for my family."

"Right you are. The thing that I really like about this robot is that it is a platform for anyone to use. Nobody really knew what pcs were good for until lots of people had them in their homes with basic tools. I'm wondering if there will be a similar period of exploration."
(Bill Christensen 10/28/2004 11:49:01 AM) |
"I think the windows-based nature of this thing will prevent it from gathering much steam in the "customizing and hacking" community. Most of us would like to see it support *nix. Windows is too hard to program for. "
(jimbo 10/28/2004 1:21:29 PM) |
"Actually when I was 12 I built a hero1 robot It had an arm voice and programable top all Hexidecimal and a bread board But was a put to gether soider kit And this just looks like a updated remake Posibilty to get another arm like that would be easy since i still have the schematics"

"If the Beagle 2 extended it's arm in Earth's gravity field the weight of the sensors would probably break it off.
I don't see how the Bagel 2 (yes, I meant to do that.) would be of much use to a high-speed, hot-rod electron jockey like me (or any other earthlings)."
(Sergeant Midnight 10/28/2004 6:17:48 PM) |
"Hey, Mr. Anonymous,
If you're interested in adding an arm to this beast, check out this web sub-site, Robotic Arm Trainer. I think the home website is www.edsci.com. I have never worked with one of these arms, so I can't vouch for it, but it looks like it is full of possibilities for you if you decide to buy the bot chassis and try to mount an arm to it.
Best of luck,
Sereant Midnight"

"customizable robot? hmm... what better than to be a servant? is that not what they are ultimately designed for?"
(keith 10/29/2004 3:52:53 AM) |
"I think that it should support UNIX-type OSes aswell ie. Linux aswell however, Windows is not so much a problem as it is a hinderance. It big, clunky and is really a waste for those that would like to simply get right into the hardware and design custom AI programs within the robot. Programmers would LOVE to get their hands on this bad-boy installed and functioning with a copy of Linux(non distribution specific, of course)"
(WILL 10/29/2004 5:31:10 AM) |
"For all out there who say that it should support a *nix based system let me ask you this. How long do you think it will take untill some ubergeek in his basment figures out how to do just that. That is what the true "hacking" comunity is all about. I mean it didnt take long before xbox's and playstations were running *nix. Its only a matter of time. they are releasing it as windows based to make it freindlier to more average users. Not just nerds like me."

"This is Thomas Burick, President/Founder of White Box Robotics. I believe that the open-source community will be very important to the growth and development of our nine series PC-BOTs. Currently, the Evolution Robotics Robot Control Center (RCC) software that we use is Windows based. However, we are working with Evolution to license their ERSP software, which provides a Linux based solution. It is important to note that White Box is a designer and manufacturer of mobile robotic platforms. We offer just one of many effective software solutions to control the 912. Once the robots are available (Q1, 2005) we expect that the open-source community will develop many more effective software and hardware solutions for our platforms. Also, a sincere thanks for all the positive comments and support!"
(Thomas Burick 10/29/2004 6:45:30 AM) |
"Program it to let the dog out while I'm at work. Oh, and also write my dissertations on it, as well."
(Wm. J. Keith 10/29/2004 9:17:21 AM) |
"Hear, hear, Mr. Burick!
You have sharp and well-guided inspiration. That is leadership I would follow."
(Sergeant Midnight 10/29/2004 10:16:12 PM) |
"Anything can be broken in to a new way. Time is all it takes."
(Bullshvik 10/30/2004 10:59:05 AM) |
"...one word....
Chobits"

"I can't help thinking this model would look great with one of those 3D "crystal balls" on top:
http://www.actuality-systems.com/
(although at £45k it's a bit expensive, however cool 3D tetris would be...)
"
(Anthony 11/2/2004 3:49:56 AM) |
"I'd build an army of them and take over the world.
"
(Poncho Sanchez 11/4/2004 10:30:02 AM) |
"And I shall call it, "Mini-me Dalek!" ..."
( 11/4/2004 1:02:12 PM) |
"A mobile PC would make a great data gathering unit. Give it arms and send it to Mars, its bound to do better than the last few robots right?
Can it mix drinks?
"
(Aaron Harris 11/4/2004 5:16:58 PM) |
"I don't think it can tend bar - for that, see Koolio - Autonomous Refrigerator Robot."
(Bill Christensen 11/5/2004 2:39:42 PM) |
"I would take it to party's and make it put cool music and make it play a vidio about it.IT WOULD BE THE BEST THING THAT I WOULD EVER HAVE! "
(Daniel Estrada 11/6/2004 9:55:27 AM) |
"with my own robot, i would take good care of it and let it help me around the house.i would try impress my friends so they can buy 1 too.and when it becomes smart i will make it DESTROY THE WORLD! no just jokeing but yeah it would be cool to have my own robo buddy. thanx 4 reading my stupid yet shrot story "
(richard armstrong 11/15/2004 2:48:08 PM) |
"Take upper mangements job a way. A robot would be purfect for walking shop floors."
(Anthony Pritchard 11/18/2004 9:27:53 PM) |
"I would put 2x high qualiy megapix digi cameras 4 eyes & work on his voice command so he can be like r2d2..or better,
the technology is out there its just a matter of time and effort to make it work."
(MIKE 4/15/2005 11:23:57 AM) |
"I can't be the only guy who wants my 'bot to bring me a cold beer from the fridge. What's happened to good old American ingenuity?
(It's alive and well - see Koolio the autonomous refrigerator robot)"
(erco@netzero.net 5/11/2005 4:08:01 PM) |
"make a robot with r2d2's bottom and c-3po's top half
that would ROCK!"
