Comments on Self-Portrait Machine - Robotically Compelled Art
Art project prototype puts the use of machines into sharp perspective. (Read
the complete story)
"If I remember correctly, the human race is supervised and educated to perfection by artificially intelligent robots in the distant future in Spielberg's film 'AI'. In a less happy example, human beings are forced to create a horrific future in Harlan Ellison's Hugo Award-winning 1967 short story 'I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream'."

"This seems like a very odd machine which adds an extra unnecessary step to the process. The robot could just draw a portrait of you on it's own but instead it forces you to do it? I guess I could see this having an application in an art school teaching the students how to properly draw the human body, or nearly anything in fact, but otherwise it seems kinda silly."

"As I mentioned, this is an art project, not a prototype for a particular kind of robot. (Although that might be kind of interesting. Could you have a telepresence art school in which the instructor could guide your hand remotely? Could you have some sort of teleoperated golf pro, who could actually help guide your hands from a remote location?) The intent of the artist is to cause people to rethink their relationship between human beings and machines."
