DARPA is moving right along on their programmable matter project. (Read

"'The Sarah Connor Chronicles' is over. Renewal by FOX or anybody else is very unlikely at this point. Which is too bad, in my opinion, as it's an excellent treatment for TV of the time-war genre of science fiction, with several different factions of human beings and machines from multiple futures all trying to control the 'high ground' of the past. (A notable literary precursor was 'The Big Time' by Fritz Lieber in 1958. The time war in 'The Sarah Connor Chronicles' seems to be simpler and across a shorter time span than in Lieber's, though looking at that surreal assassin-creature in the video, the Terminator war might be orchestrated from much further in the future than the most of the characters believe."

"For that matter, in 'T:TSCC' you had the time war and the machine war in one place. Leiber's 'Big Time' and Harry Harrison's 'War With the Robots' in the same package! Extra points for mentioning the Vernor Vinge's Singularity by name."

"Known space (I think that was the general over title.) had some left over tech like vari-swords and that sort of thing (Niven, various others). Jack Vance did the same thing with glass knives.
The latest might have been In March to the sea. (I am not going to look up the author. I am. . . Weber and Ringo.
This reminds me a lot more of the alleged saucer material from Roswell. "

"Niven - memory plastic. Not quite the same technology, but it's the first thing I thought of when I saw the article."

"When I saw 'you slap it in different ways and it reforms its shape into a variety of simple tools,' I also thought of Niven, specifically the artifact in 'The Soft Weapon' -- specifically specifically his own adaptation of it into an episode of 'Star Trek' from the '70s."
