Comments on Cloud Cities: Our Green Jovian Future
Updated! It's a little bit round-a-bout, but it's possible that our green future is out there in a gas giant. Now with more science, at reader request. (Read the complete story)

"Incredibly enough, the gas which the Cloud city's economy is built on, Tibanna gas, is used in a very similar way! According to wookiepedia, it releases a large amount of energy when exposed to COHESIVE LIGHT! BTW, the wookipedia has a Also, please replace the fan made pic of cloud city with an authentic matte painting before SW fanatics see it and stage a violent demonstration on site. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Bespin
Thanks, Yossi - see further quotes below - Bill Christensen [ed]"

"Or you could look at Michael McCollum's "The Clouds of Saturn" in which the entire human race migrated to cloud cities (extremely big ballons)on Saturn, because Earth became uninhabitable when the sun heated up. Here also, the clouds were "mined", and used to keep the cities floating and heated."

"That article is less than informative. And that's an understatement: it's only information on "ultra-dense Deuterium" is that: -It is made of Deuterium -It's really dense Actual paper, with actual information, here: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6VND-4VP66CS-4&_user=333848&_rdoc=1&_fmt=&_orig=search&_sort=d&view=c&_acct=C000017279&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=333848&md5=f349b069a6549bc887390a070ccc8d47"

"'Less than informative'? I actually said 3 things about ultra-dense deuterium in the article. Also, it's a highly informative article on its subject, namely, cloud cities.
However, thanks for providing a link to an abstract containing more information on high-energy deuterium. I'll post the relevant bits here.

"High-density hydrogen is of great interest both as a fuel with the highest energy content of any combustion fuel, and as a target material for laser initiated inertial confinement fusion. A much denser deuterium material named D(−1) can be observed by pulsed laser induced Coulomb explosions giving a well-defined, high kinetic energy release (KER). Neutral time-of-flight of the fragments from the material shows that the Coulomb explosions have a KER of 630 eV. By using ion time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) with variable acceleration voltages and a few different values of laser pulse power, we now prove the mass and charge of the particles as well as the KER. In fact, the ions are so fast that they must be H+, D+ or T+. By using two different flight lengths, we prove with certainty that the spectra are due to D+ ions and not to photons or electromagnetic effects. The results also establish the fragmentation patterns of the ultra-dense D(−1) material in the electric field. The energy release of 630 ± 30 eV corresponds to an interatomic distance D–D of 2.3 ± 0.1 pm. This material is probably an inverted metal with the deuterons moving in the field from the stationary electrons, which gives a predicted interatomic distance of 2.5 pm, close to the measured value. Thus, we prove that an ultra-dense deuterium material exists."

More science from qualified authorities is always welcome."

"Perry, thanks. Here's the cover art from The Clouds of Saturn, which sounds like a cool book.

"Yossi - sorry to have responded to comments from the bottom up. Here's some info on Tibanna gas (who knew?):

'Tibanna was excreted by beldons, huge gas-filled creatures. The gas was a by-product of the vapors consumed by beldons. Tibanna was extracted from Bespin's atmosphere as atmospheric gases rose on updrafts through Cloud City's unipod. The gas was then processed and packed in carbonite for transport off-planet.
Tibanna gas produced four times its normal energy output when cohesive light passed through it. Thus, when spin-sealed (compacted at the atomic level), Tibanna was used as a conducting agent in blasters and other energy weapons, producing greater energy yields and thus greater amounts of damage.'

"But don't gas giants pump out super massive amounts of radiation? They say no amount of shielding can stop it."
(Lurker 5/17/2009 11:47:39 AM)
"How on earth would a floating city mine a substance "so heavy that a cube with sides of length 10 cm weights 130 tonnes, a material whose density is significantly greater than the material in the core of the Sun""
(Zac 5/18/2009 1:10:39 PM)
"That's an easy one. With all the energy, you'd run those repulsorlifts like crazy."
(Bill 5/18/2009 1:14:03 PM)
"it's hard to imagine you could get more energy than required for mining"
( 5/31/2009 11:53:11 PM)
"Fusion isn't green. It produces high energy neutrons and gamma rays which require heavy shielding, which would become radioactive and break down at the atomic level requiring replacement and disposal."
