Storing information in natural deposits and fields. (Read the complete story)

"It's time for a Doctor Who reference ! The double episode "Silence in the library/Forest of the dead" by Steven Moffat takes place in the biggest library in the universe. So big it doesn't need a name, just "The Library". The library take up an entire planet, with a giant hard drive in it's core, storing every book ever written. Here's the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf6Sbc4vVrQ"
(Yossi Preminger 1/29/2009 7:22:38 AM)
"Another reference: in the Lem's story "Altruizine or a true account of how Bonhomius the hermetic hermit tried to bring about universal happiness", Klapaucius Visits the planet of the HPLD, the Highest Possible Level of Development, the most advanced civilization in the universe. Their entire planet is a computer, it's desert made of intelligent sand ..."

"Thanks, Yossi - here's the video:

"Take a look at the references for the gnostotron and the unimaginably larger gigagnostotron, from Lem's fabulous Cyberiad."
(Bill Christensen 1/29/2009 9:52:59 AM)
"This also reminds me of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, where the earth was constructed as a giant computer to develope the question for the meaning of life, the universe, and everything."
(meditating bear 1/29/2009 9:54:46 AM)
"Meditating Bear - you beat me to it! Was talking with contractors this afternoon; will now get back to work. You're referring to the Earth, designed calculate the Question to the Ultimate Answer, described by Deep Thought."
(Bill Christensen 1/29/2009 2:37:05 PM)
"I'd say this would also reference Gaia from Asimov's Foundation series, tho that went a couple steps farther."
(Ashley 1/29/2009 3:19:58 PM)
"I've seen Silence in the Library (it was good). The reason that the Doctor gives (that we later find out isn't quite so, but you probably expected that, with this being Doctor Who and all) is that people need the tactile, olfactory, visual quality that paper books have. Does this remind anyone of a certain eBook device made by Amazon?"
