Comments on Moral Performance Enhancement
Is it possible for a person to behave better through the use of pharmaceuticals? (Read
the complete story)
"This is betrization from Lem's "Return from the stars"."
(Yossi Preminger 9/11/2008 7:36:03 AM) |
"It's a pretty close match; see betrization from Stanislaw Lem's prescient 1961 novel Return From the Stars."
(Bill Christensen 9/11/2008 7:37:38 AM) |
"This could potentially be very misguided. Is the point to make us more empathic? Or is it to guide our rational thinking in moral circumstances?
Is an ethical decision a rational process? Kant says yes, Utilitarians say yes, Randians say yes.
Intuitionists say no, and ethics of care is ambiguous. All of these ethical frameworks can generate a plausible yet distinct ethical response to a seemingly simple scenario (yeah, I know, says more about the problems of philosophy than science). But Without this fundamental query at least addressed, the results of this study will be ambiguous and inscrutable. I like the idea of "smart" drugs enhancing cognitive ability, and then using this enhanced ability to rationally address problem solving, moral or otherwise, but without a couple of proper philosophers of mind on board with this project, I am highly dubious that it will yield edible fruit."
(Zac Hunter 9/11/2008 10:58:33 AM) |
"Empathy-enhancers? They're already treating people for the opposite with anti-anxiety drugs. I don't think there's anything wrong with a drug that makes those at a polar extreme of uncaring think twice about stabbing you. Unless the side effects are seriously bad."
(Rudyard G 9/11/2008 8:01:16 PM) |
"I am certain that Arthur C Clarke's 2061 and 3001 have a similar concept."
(Fortigurn 9/12/2008 4:04:40 AM) |
