Comments on Artificial Neural Network Predicts Death Row Executions
Slightly disturbing article about how computers can predict who will actually be executed on death row better than human observers. (Read the complete story)

"Well, I don't remember specific mention of executions, but from what it was described as doing, it would be logical to assume that they used it for that also. In some of Asimov's stories, he had a building sized supercomputer, which could "calculate anything" if you gave it sufficient input data, and asked the appropriate questions. One thing they used it for was for predicting how the outcome of voting would be, and who the last swing voter would be, so that only one person would cast an actual vote. And there were several similar things it did in other stories, so I'd say it's reasonable to claim it might have been used for a similar thing."

"Well in the British Sci-Fi series Blake's 7, trials were judged by an impartial computer which was fed trial data submitted by the Prosecution and Defense, and decided on the relevant sentence. Blake himself (at the start of the series) was sent to a penal colony on the basis of false evidence submitted by the corrupt totalitarian government. The computer itself was completely impartial, but the data it used to make judgments was still vulnerable to manipulation... "

"In the Futurama episode "Fear of a Bot Planet", the whole judicial system is made up of robots. While calculating the verdict, the supercomputer judge freezes causing a reboot."

"There was also an excellent robotic judge in an old episode of Lost in Space. "Episode 79: Fugitives in Space" Being sentenced by an unsympathetic robotic judge to a hot labor planet and only given a block of ice for good behavior. That made a lasting impression. "
