Color Frequency Video Turntable At NextFest 2006

The Color Frequency Video Turntable is the creation of Japanese musician and artist Miyako Dub Squall. This unusual creation, which allows a musician to literally draw music, is being presented at the NextFest 2006 technology exhibition in the Javits Center in NYC.

The musician/artist draws with different colors on a standard LP record-sized blank piece of paper. The sensors in the arm of the turntable can distinguish between five different colors (black, red, yellow, blue and green). As the turntable spins the 'platter' the music plays.

It is also possible to use transparent records, and overlay them, creating entirely new music from separate play sheets.

Miyako says that her inspiration came from the tanteburisuto - turntables used by DJs in clubs. The Color Frequency Video Turntable is both beautiful to look at in use, and enjoyable to listen to.
