First Chinese Security Guard Robot
Chinese researchers have announced a security guard robot to help keep the peace in public places. This is the first security guard robot developed in China.

(First Chinese Security Guard Robot)
The robot was jointly developed by the Civil Aviation University of China and Tianjin YAAN Technology Electronics Co. Ltd., the robot can patrol residential zones, airports, warehouses, department stores and other public places.
The specifications?
The two-wheel differential drive robot, looking like a small car, is 90 centimeters long, 55 centimeters wide and 75 centimeters high, and weighs 55 kilograms.
It can move independently on cement pavements and climb slopes with a 15 to 20 gradient. The robot can move freely on fixed or specially designed routes.
It uses both a pan-tilt-zoom camera as well as wide-angle camera; ultrasonic sensors help guide the Chinese security guard robot in avoiding obstacles autonomously. It can send information and images to a central control station for interpretation.
This little guy reminds me of the Robot Probes (Arr-twos) from Niven and Pournelle's 1981 novel Oath of Fealty:
That led to his development of robot probes; small devices with cameras and sound equipment which could move freely through Todos Santos under Rand's direct control.

Update 05-Jul-2008: See this early reference to a guard robot in Philip K. Dick's 1955 short story The Hood Maker (also found under the name Immunity). End update
