Meta's Horizon Studio's Unique Avatars From Text Prompts
In Neal Stephenson’s 1992 novel Snow Crash, the Metaverse is populated by highly customizable digital representations of people, called avatars. Users can build their own avatars from scratch using an Avatar Construction Set — a collection of software tools that lets them assemble and fine-tune every detail of their virtual appearance.
In September 2025, at Meta Connect, Meta announced new generative AI tools in Horizon Studio that allow users to create fully rigged, animated 3D avatars using simple text prompts — bringing Stephenson’s concept much closer to reality.

“The couples coming off the monorail can't afford to have custom avatars made and don't know how to write their own. They have to buy off-the-shelf avatars. One of the girls has a pretty nice one. It would be considered quite the fashion statement among the K-Tel set. Looks like she has bought the Avatar Construction Set and put together her own, customized model out of miscellaneous parts.”
According to Meta’s announcement:“You can even generate a fully rigged and animated 3D avatar… Type a prompt like ‘a cyborg robot ninja yeti with red eyes and a red bandana.’ Pick one of four generated options, and the tool will instantly create a 3D mesh that’s rigged, textured, and ready to use out of the box. Decide if you want the character to live as a non-playable character, or let players embody it by making it available as an avatar for purchase or download.”
