It turns out that in space, plasma can form crystalline structures free from Earth’s gravity, spinning into vortices that even resemble DNA.

The reference is to Star Trek: The Next Generation season five, episode 4: "Silicon Avatar," which aired in 1991. Enterprise-D approaching the Crystalline Entity, a massive, destructive spaceborne lifeform that consumes all organic matter on planets it encounters.
