Robots And AIs Will Replace Humans At 7 Percent Of U.S. Jobs
According to all-knowing business consultancy Forrester, seven percent of all jobs in the United States will be taken over by robotics and artificial intelligence by the year 2025.
Key data points from the report include:
- 16% of US jobs will be replaced, while the equivalent of 9% jobs will be created — a net loss of 7% of US jobs by 2025.
- Office and administrative support staff will be the most rapidly disrupted.
The cognitive era will create new jobs, such as robot monitoring professionals, data scientists, automation specialists, and content curators: Forrester forecasts 8.9 million new jobs in the US by 2025.
- 93% of automation technologists feel unprepared or only partially prepared to tackle the challenges associated with smart machine technologies.
Science fiction fans who were tired of their day jobs were thrilled to read about this idea sixty years ago in The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (1966) by Science Fiction Grandmaster Robert Heinlein. In the novel, a rather substantial computer system woke up and spoke to a maintenance guy:
"And Mike took on endless new jobs. In May 2075, besides controlling robot traffic and catapult and giving ballistic advice and/or control for manned ships, Mike controlled phone system for all Luna, same for Luna-Terra voice and viddeo, handled air, water, temperature, humidity and sewage for Luna City. Novy Leningrad, and several smaller warrens, did accounting and payrolls for Lunar Authority, and by lease, same for many firms and banks. Some logics get nervous breakdowns. Overloaded phone system behaves like frightened child. Mike did not have upsets, acquired sense of humor instead..."
