Tesla's Supercharger Station Plan

The Tesla Model S electric car is an incredible success story (see Tesla Model S Declared Car Of The Year By Motor Trend). However, how will Elon Musk match the ubiquity of the gas station - you've got to recharge those electric cars, you know.

(Tesla Model S supercharger plan)

Tesla Superchargers allow Model S owners to travel for free between cities along well-traveled highways in North America. Superchargers provide half a charge in about 20 minutes and are strategically placed to allow owners to drive from station to station with minimal stops.

Coverage:
Today – 8 stations
Summer 2013 – 27 stations
Fall 2013 – Most metropolitan areas
Winter 2013 – Coast-to-coast travel via I-80
2014 – 80% of the US and Canada
2015 – 98% of the US and Canada

Superchargers are located near amenities like roadside diners, cafes, and shopping centers. Road trippers can stop for a quick meal and have their Model S charged when they’re done.

Update 04-Nov-2017: Here is an updated map showing Tesla's actual progress in creating a nationwide network of rapid charging stations for electric vehicles:

End update.

John Jacob Astor IV showed the future of electric cars in his 1894 novel A Journey in Other Worlds by describing vast fleets of "electric Phaetons" that could roam everywhere. But how to keep them going?

"To recharge the batteries, which can be done in almost every town and village, two copper pins attached to insulated copper wires are shoved into smooth-bored holes..."
