CCTV Camera Watches, Attached LCD Tells You How To Behave
SF writer Cory Doctorow snapped this picture off Brick Lane in east London yesterday:
(A new aesthetic eruption)
The picture depicts a device combining an LCD screen projecting a rotating series of public safety messages telling passersby how to behave, with a CCTV camera to make bloody sure you do as you're told.
Somehow, it seems fitting that the UK, which gave us George Orwell and the idea of the telescreen, would also give us this new abomination.
The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment.
