We Robot 2012 Conference Needs Your Help
We Robot 2012 is a new conference organized by the University of Miami School of Law. They are seeking contributions by academics, practitioners and industry.

We seek reports from the front lines of robot design and development, and invite contributions for works-in-progress sessions. In so doing, we hope to encourage conversations between the people designing, building, and deploying robots, and the people who design or influence the legal and social structures in which robots will operate.Robotics seems increasingly likely to become a transformative technology. This conference will build on existing scholarship exploring the role of robotics to examine how the increasing sophistication of robots and their widespread deployment everywhere from the home, to hospitals, to public spaces, and even to the battlefield disrupts existing legal regimes or requires rethinking of various policy issues.
Some of the specific requests for papers are:
- Effect of robotics on the workplace, e.g. small businesses, hospitals, and other contexts where robots and humans work side-by-side.
- Issues of legal or moral responsibility, e.g. relating to autonomous robots or robots capable of exhibiting emergent behavior.
- Issues arising from automation of professional tasks such as unauthorized practice of law or medicine.
- Issues relating to robotic prosthetics (e.g. access equity issues, liability for actions activated by conscious or unconscious mental commands).
I was amazed by their interest in determining liability in the event of destructive unconscious mental commands. I wonder if one of the conference organizers had been influenced by the 1956 movie Forbidden Planet, in which a scientist unwittingly gains mental control of the vast Krell technology, wielding it unconsciously with devastating effect.
