Battlefield Extraction-Assist Robot (BEAR) Evolves

The Vecna Battlefield Extraction-Assist Robot (BEAR) has been evolving nicely over the past several years. Now, the BEAR can be controlled using the AcceleGlove; in the future, the BEAR will have semi-autonomous behaviors built in.

“If robots could be used in the face of threats such as urban combat, booby-trapped IEDs, and chemical and biological weapons, it could save medics' and fellow soldiers' lives," says Gary Gilbert of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command's Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC), which helped fund BEAR’s development.

In the 1996 Japanese manga film Roujin Z, a self-contained atomic power reactor gives this unique part bed/part machine robot all the energy it needs. can also climb stairs and carry the sick.
