ReWalk Exoskeleton Video
Here's a nice video of the ReWalk medical exoskeleton from Israel21C. The device was profiled in an article earlier this spring; see ReWalk Medical Powered Exoskeleton.
ReWalk comprises a light wearable brace support suit which integrates DC motors at the joint, rechargeable batteries, an array of sensors and a computer-based control system. It fits the body snugly to detect upper body movements, which are used to initiate and maintain the walking process. Wearers also use crutches for stability and safety.ReWalk is undergoing clinical trials in Israel at the Rehabilitation Hospital at Chaim Sheba Medical Center.
rgo's demo video features team member Radi Kioff, a 40-year-old Druze Israeli citizen who was shot in the back while serving in the Israel Defense Forces during the first Lebanon War.
Here's a very early reference to the idea of a wearable suit that would help you stand up; it's from The Brain Pirates a 1938 story by John W. Campbell.
"We have those new suits rigged with atomic-powered lifting gadgets, so that'll protect us from the weight, if what our instruments say about that world's true...""I'll go check up on those suits and make some adjustments. I hadn't thought they'd have to handle any double-gravity worlds."
(Read more about the atomic-powered lifting suits)
For a more specifically medical exoskeleton reference, see the entry for the titanium exoskeleton from A Specter is Haunting Texas (1968).
