Real-Time Mind-Controlled Robotic Limbs Soon?

Researchers at Japan's Osaka University are looking for human subjects to test out controllers for robotic limbs. The intent is to place electronic sheets directly on the surface of the brain.

Researchers have already worked with volunteers to record brain waves caused by the volitional movement of arms, elbows and fingers. It is believed that they can succeed in determining the subjects intent with an accuracy of about eighty percent.

With this data in hand, researchers led by Osaka University Medical School neurosurgery professor Toshiki Yoshimine hope to directly implant sensors upon the brain during open-skull surgery.

The final step would be to directly wire the implanted sensors to surgically attached robotic limbs; small computers would mediate the interaction using the data gathered on intention and brain activity.

If this research bears fruit, we might get a bit closer to the communications implant from Niven and Pournelle's 1981 novel Oath of Fealty.

"I used my implant to tell MILLIE what we wanted and she took care of it," Art said.

"I see," Sir George's eyes focused on nothing for a moment.
