Segway's New RMP - Robotic Mobility Platform

Segway's new RMP - robotic mobility platform is out, replacing their older model, based on Segway technology you would readily recognize (see Segway Robotic Mobility Platform Looks Like A Tumblebug for details).

(Segway RMP)

There seem to be very few details available for the new version of Segway's RMP, other than the fact that it can carry at least 400 pounds of robot stuff, and will cost something in the area of $50,000. So much for tooling around offroad this weekend on one...

But if you take a look at the video, you will be able to admire it's "creepy" movement.

(Segway RMP video)
"You know it's a good robot when it's creepy."

This device reminded at least one reader of the smartwheels from Neal Stephenson's 1992 novel Snow Crash.

On the end is a squat foot, rubber tread on the bottom, swiveling on a ball joint. As the wheel rolls, the feet plant themselves one at a time, almost glomming into one continuous tire. If you surf over a bump, the spokes contract to roll over it...

There seems to be little information available on the the Segway RMP at present; but it is a real product, not just someone's photoshopped concept. Via Segway's new RMP!; thanks to Dustin Huffman for the tip.
