Galactic Suites - LEO at $4 Million Per 3 Day Stay

Galactic Suites, the orbital hotel, will be accepting guests starting in 2012. The price - just $4,000,000 for a three-day stay.

Xavier Claramunt says the three-bedroom boutique hotel's joined-up pod structure will look oddly molecular; each pod room had to fit inside a rocket to be taken into space. (Maybe they should go inflatable - see the CSS Skywalker - inflatable orbital resort.)

Galactic Suite began as a hobby for former aerospace engineer Claramunt, until a space enthusiast decided to make the science fiction fantasy a reality by fronting most of the $3 billion needed to build the hotel.

And the best part? Go around the world every 80 minutes - while relaxing in the spa room - surrounded by relaxing bubbles.

SF fans recall the spacious lounge in the orbiting space station in 2001: A Space Odyssey; note the low curving ceiling (this space station was spun on its axis to provide artificial gravity for the guests).

Science fiction fans may recall the orbital retirement hotels suggested by Carl Sagan in his 1985 novel Contact.

Suddenly, hitherto unheard-of sums of money became available for investment in civilian orbital stations. By the very end of the Second Millenium there were rudimentary retirement hotels a few hundred kilometers up...
