Comments on Re Google: William Gibson, Read More SF
It turns out that sf writers have imagined Google and Google's future plans rather precisely. (Read
the complete story)
"Arguably, there was something akin to Google in Murray Leinster's A LOGIC NAMED JOE. I read about this on a website called www.technovelgy.com { big grin }"
(Winchell Chung 9/1/2010 6:31:43 AM) |
"Ah yes, of course {nods sagely while desperately fumbling with smartphone/joymaker}... 'if you punch for the weather forecast or who won today's race at Hialea or who was mistress of the White House durin' Garfield's administration or what is PDQ and R sellin' for today, that comes on the screen too. The relays in the Tank do it. The Tank is a big buildin' full of all the facts in creation and all the recorded telecasts that ever was made - an' it's hooked in with all the other Tanks all over the country - an' everything you wann know or see or hear, you punch for it an' you get it. Very convenient.' From the entry on the Carson circuit. Handy site to know, that technovelgy.com."
(Bill Christensen 9/1/2010 6:59:26 AM) |
"It doesn't pre-date the existing examples, but Douglas Adams' & 'Hyperland' (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7190175107515525470#), also featuring Tom Baker, though assumes "our own private genie" would be locally , not remotely, hosted. As well as accurately describing hypertext but pre-dating the first web browser."

"I'm reminded of the application called "Earth" in Stephenson's "Snow Crash" where Hiro Protagonist mentioned how much it cost to have a subscription to it only corporations and (remnants) of governments usually used it... and here in real life Google is giving it for "free" to everyone. "
(AJ_Dual 9/2/2010 9:39:57 PM) |
"AJ, as Winchell Chung recommended, I've been looking around on that 'technovelgy' web site. Would you believe that I found an entry for Stephenson's virtual earth device from Snow Crash AND a related story about Google Earth. Who knew? ;)"
(Bill Christensen 9/2/2010 10:42:23 PM) |
"The technoverse in "Snow Crash" is a pale imitation of the real-life Second Life imho.
On a completely unrelated note, this site needs a new catagory: Crime, Crime Solving, and Punishment. The internet has spawned plenty of new types of crime; I'm sure some writer somewhere has written about it already. One Sherlock Holmes story (the name escapes me at the moment) has a case of identity theft long before it was recognized in real life.
