Comments on Liquid Armor In Two Flavors: Shear Thickening and Magnetorheological
Liquid armor using shear thickening fluid and magnetorheological fluid is being developed to protect soldiers and law enforcement personnel. (Read the complete story)

"I seem to recall something called an "Impact Suit" from Niven and Gerrold's The Flying Sorcerers. The suit was flexible, but became rigid if anything struck it."
(Nyrath 4/26/2004 7:35:40 AM)
"As it happens, that novel is being reissued this month. My used book store didn't have it; but I'll look for it in the new edition."
(Bill Christensen 4/26/2004 6:11:03 PM)
"I first encountered it in John Brunner's Stand on Zanzibar only in there it was used for offensive purposes in a glove."
(Mocker668 5/1/2004 8:38:42 AM)
"As Nyrath says, this technology also appeared in Larry Niven's work. In the "Ringworld Engineers", Louis Wu wore a suit that was normally flexible like leather, but solidified on impact (e.g. to be bullet-proof)."
(Ray Girvan 5/11/2004 4:12:44 PM)
"Don't forget Niven's Impact armor from ringworld - that stuff was cool - and it sounds like the MIT material is a step in that direction"
(Tim Morrison 11/11/2004 2:35:38 PM)
"What comes to my mind is the Battle Suit in Card's "Ender's Game". Sounds like the perfect mechanism to 'freeze' the suit's joints when hit in battle."
(Fish Pierce 1/2/2005 11:09:54 AM)
"We think it is kool that u guyz have cum up w/this idea. Keep up the good work. "

"This is really cool, our police might benefit from this, instead of using their bulky heavy vests..."
(Remus Ogarius 1/26/2005 8:46:10 PM)
"very nice. We still do the similar work. http://www.pangumrf.com "
(wuhanpangu 2/14/2005 9:57:13 PM)
"A liquid armor suit are described in the roleplaying game "Shadowruns" expansion book "Fields of fire" (about mercenaries. A fictionus character comment on a bad experience with a malfuntion armor that didn't deliquified after and impact makeing him unable to move. A rather humorus description. :-)"
(Michael 11/6/2005 12:37:12 AM)
"Found it! The impact suit from The Flying Sorcerors."

(Johnny 2/15/2006 8:23:16 AM)
"Sounds like a great Idea for the nextGen Motorcycle armor"
(Steve 2/15/2006 8:26:15 AM)
"In "The Jetsons" episode titled "Test Pilot" ('62-'63 season) George wore/tested one (and it held up to everything except being washed in water...)"
(DZA 2/15/2006 9:14:18 AM)
"Interesting when will it be available to the rest of us"
( 2/15/2006 1:16:06 PM)
"crap - could have used this in Iraq!!!!"
(old soldier 2/18/2006 10:00:52 AM)
"It is very interesting what they are comming up with now. But the real question is how long will it be till this product reaches the commerical side of things and we the consumer actually get our hands on it. The really scary thought is what will happen if criminals get this stuff"
(Randal 2/27/2006 4:52:07 AM)
"can the resin be permanently cured?"
(nocair 3/2/2006 6:43:09 AM)
"batman? "
( 3/14/2006 10:33:20 PM)
"could you see this material being for sale in the near future"
(Virgil 5/19/2006 2:41:23 PM)
"we're approaching a time when we will need heroes of a different sort. these materials could become lifesavers"
( 5/19/2006 2:43:19 PM)
"would anyone be interested in that line of work???"
( 5/19/2006 2:44:40 PM)
"I can't believe that! I'd hate to be an Iraqi right about now! Does any other country know about or have any "liquid armor"? If you know, please e-mail me at Need4speed981@aol.com Thanks"
(Tippmannphreak 5/21/2006 4:18:18 PM)
"whats the purpose of having this if cant be applied to every day life. or at least to someone who can use if to benefit mankind"
( 5/21/2006 9:21:53 PM)
"See this article on the ski cap (or beanie) that doubles as a helmet it also uses a shear thickening agent."
(Bill Christensen 5/22/2006 6:43:09 AM)
"Deep sea diver's magnetically "stiffened" flexible suit was first used by Captain's Nemo seamen (see Julius Verne, " 20000 leagues under the sea"). But, it was even better: it provided flexibility while protecting against external pressure. However, I don't think it was hardening on impact to protect against penetration."
(Chris Wyszkowski 5/22/2006 6:03:01 PM)
"The magnetorheological armor is exactly like Iron Man's armor. Since the mid-60's it has been a soft-as-silk material that when polarized by a magnetic field stiffens to become stronger than steel while remaining flexible."
(Jay 5/22/2006 9:18:37 PM)
"could this be the start of the heroic era????"
(V 5/24/2006 11:00:33 AM)
"You can easily simulate the shear thickening liquid. Just take normal corn flour and add water until it turns hard when you press it. Now just play around with it and have fun!"
( 6/1/2006 3:11:58 AM)
"would it be bullet proof. if not then its no help to me"
(v 6/2/2006 8:09:26 PM)
"shear thickening is better with Nano ceramic fibre dispersion in Polyglycol than pure silica particles,My Email anildefence@rediffmail.com"

"And the magnetorheological version was shown in Batman Begins, with his cape..."
(Dug 8/28/2006 7:28:28 PM)

(Michel Baikrich 9/1/2006 11:24:43 AM)
