"I would beg to differ on who introduced this idea. Frederik Pohl covered this topic in his Gateway series (in particular, Heechee Rendezvous, 1984). Several of the characters converse with Ancestors or "dead men", which are personalities of dying people recorded into electronic devices."

"Gregory Benford also used this idea prior to Gibson, in "Great Sky River" (1987). Recorded personalities, called "Aspects" were passed from generation to generation. They maintained continuity of knowledge for thousands of years, in everything from science to religion. Of course, the people living at the time rarely listened to them..."

"Gibson himself made recorded personalities a key plot element of his 1986 short story "The Winter Market". And Poul Anderson's pre-1974 novella "The Voortrekkers" had the personalities of interstellar explorers downloaded into the computers of their spaceship; one crew member was the ship's "personality" and the other "inhabited" robots and auxiliary vehicles as needed."
