"I do not think that the Jump Harness was related to the "Rocket Pack" or "Jet Pack". As the story indicates this is in a crowded location. Flames or even high pressure gas would not be reasonable. Noise, fumes, etc. My guess is the same "science" as bounce tubes and drop shafts. But perhaps just legs off of power armor ala Starship Troopers. "
