"In the short story, it was implied they were AI NPC's, not other 'players'. But within the technology implied by the short story, it might be possible. *EXCEPT* it wasn't actually implied within the novel that there was the bandwidth to interact with other 'players' in other locations. It was implied that there *wasn't*. It seemed to be single unit AI environments, the main characters, a man and wife, hadn't actually merged their VR environments at the beginning of the story. They couldn't interact with each other inside their VR, even though it was being run on the same computer."
