Arthur C. Clarke called it "hyperfilament" in "The Fountains of Paradise" (and there's even a line about what a great cheese slicer it would make!)
My favorite Niven use is in the Variable Sword that we see in the Ringworld stories.
Also, William Gibson featured it in "Johnny Mnemonic": the Yakuza ninja had a spool of it in his artificial thumb (which had a weighted tip). He'd whip it around and slice his opponent into several sections. Charming, huh? "
