Comments on ARED Keeps ISS Astronauts Fit
'Joe got out the gravity-simulator harnesses... set for full Earth-gravity simulation.'- Murray Leinster, 1953. (Read
the complete story)
"This makes me think about natives of heavy gravity planets who visit Earth, or who live in space, and who somehow always maintain their great strength. How do they do it without Jovian (or whatever) exercise?"
(Bill Christensen 1/12/2013 3:15:21 PM) |
"That depends on the story. If it's just a "normal person" who happens to be from a high-grav world, then there's not much excuse. If, however, it's a genetically engineered person then it depends on how they've been engineered. You've already got the article about the PEPCK-Cmus "Mighty Mice", there's the genetic quirk that some of the descendents of the pueblo indians have that makes their metabolism more (too) efficient at taking in and using food, there's genetic quirks that make "stronger muscles" that don't mass more (ie: for the same mass/volume, it's several times stronger than "normal" muscles, because it's actually a different design). If a single person was genetically engineered to have all three of those genetic quirks, he'd be essentially a "heavy grav" (super) human, but would not be adversly affected by a visit to earth. Or at least, not too much. (that's how Honor Harrington keeps her heavy-grav abilities despite normally not having access to heavy-grav for exercise, tho admittedly she still exercises a lot)"
