(to display an A.I. avatar for consultation) is real, it uses a fog (air mixed with vapour) screen to display the image, I don't think that any post-production special effect work is used for that scene, though for more clarification you got to ask the people of Amblin. http://www.fogscreen.com/ . While the device in the article don't mix anything at all with the air, though it probably condense the air a bit so that image can be displayed, the name Heliodisplay is a little bit distorting though, since it didn't have anything to do with the sun (Helio), something like "AirScreen" or something like that probably would be much better suited. Personally, this kind of display is quite nice if you want to people to touch the display and not risking breaking it from overuse.
