Comments on NASA's Reconfigurable Space Suit
110 years after the basic idea is described, NASA is still working out the design. Now, they're reconfigurable and plug-n-play. (Read the complete story)

"Here's a nicely done NASA documentary of space suits, done in 2006.

"
(Bill Christensen 1/28/2010 9:50:23 AM)

"From the descriptions given, I'd say that the Mechanical Counter-Pressure suit designs that Dava Newman is a better example of a "reconfigurable", "modular", or "plug and play" space-suit design. (it's about 1/4 of the way down the Spacesuits page on Project Rho)"
(Ashley 1/28/2010 9:59:49 AM)
"I've actually written about that suit; see my provocatively titled article BioSuit Space Suit Vs. Tentacle Monsters for pictures of Dr. Newman and her suit at NextFest 2006 that I took myself. And by all means go to Winchell's Project Rho Space Suit page for additional information as well."
(Bill Christensen 1/28/2010 11:58:47 AM)
"Ah. I thought I remembered an article on it here, but I couldn't find it when I checked so just referenced Project Rho."
(Ashley 1/29/2010 12:34:50 AM)
"The manga/anime series "Planetes" briefly covers the concept of modular plug n play suits. Specifically in the first anime episode. People are measured for boots and gloves. Body suits are small, medium, or large. And helmets are one size fits all."
(Joey1058 1/30/2010 9:22:19 PM)
"Planetes was nifty because it did go to the effort of trying to get its science right. They even tried to make sure that the displays were ones that would actually be used, and showing the right data."
(Ashley 1/31/2010 10:13:32 AM)
"I'm pretty sure I have that series on my shelf somewhere... I'll see if I can find it."
(Bill Christensen 1/31/2010 11:34:35 AM)
