Comments on Domed Cities - For Earth?
Is it really time to start thinking about whether or not we need to start covering Earth cities to protect them (and us) from the rest of our own planet? (Read

| "I see a few flaws with this. First, if we're venting all of the harmful air pollution in the atmosphere, wouldn't that be, y'know, NOT helping the planet? I'm also afraid that a big glass (or similar) dome would act as a greenhouse. That would mean that a cooling system is required. (If you remove heat from the air in the dome, it has to go somewhere. Namely, outside the dome. Wouldn't that make global warming even worse? It may not sound bad to some of you, who may be thinking something along the lines of "Who cares? We'll be in the dome, so it doesn't really matter". Amd that's true, but what about the rest of the world? Those billions of people who don't have domes? When we, as a society, won't pay for mosquito nets and food, what makes you think we'd pay for a massive, climate-controlled glass bubble? Especially when everybody's paying 100 bucks per pound for steak because the farms and ranches outside the dome are suffering massive shortages due to the increasingly hot climate killing crops (which also happens to be livestock feed). Now, some of these problems could be solved in we were to stop polluting the air. Of course, then we could simply suffer for a little bit while the earth fixes itself (and let's face, we're crap at fixing nature. always have been). | "Two things, first I thought I'd share what I read first before rereading the title. I read Doomed Cities which puts an entirely different spin on the article.
Second, Zero, heat does not create greenhouse effect. Global warming is mainly caused by the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere followed by the sun's rays blaring down on us from above. Since we could seriously filter the exhaust of the dome, yes we'd put out heat, but we could contain and possibly even reverse the carbon footprint of large cities. Without so much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, extra heat would be free to be radiated into space once again. The amount of heat the human race produces is nothing compared to what the sun fires at us every second of every day so when it comes to heat, making sure we don't keep the sun's rays in is more important than making sure we don't produce heat." As for a greenhouse effect, the temperature inside a dome could actually be made *cooler* than ambient by using shutters or tint to control light intake.
If you think about the net energy savings in heating and cooling conferred onto the building inside, and prevention of snow buildup(and requisite removal), versus the very reasonable cost of geodesic building, a dome could probably pay for itself in a decade." ( 7/7/2009 11:38:46 AM) |
