Comments on Rat Brain Robot Gets Upgrades
Yes, it's a real cyborg - only the brain is used. (Read the complete story)

"So is the brain in the bell jar kept separate from the little robot? If so that would present some really challenging issues regarding the locus of consciousness vs phenomenological experience."
(Zac Hunter 6/16/2009 10:27:33 AM)
"The word 'sentient' literally means 'sensing' things, capable of 'sensation.' It doesn't mean anything else. Unfortunately it's used by sci-fi writers and other confused Westerners as a synonym for 'intelligent.' There has never been any honest controversy about whether rats are 'sentient,' of course they are."

"Odd to see this today after just watching 'Rise of the Cybermen' from 'Doctor Who' last night, about robot slaves constructed with mechanical bodies and human brains."

"A "think tank" is a network of human brains. We just need to connect them better."
(Peter Jacobs 6/16/2009 5:10:00 PM)
"This is incredibly sad. Those poor rodents. How do those brains perceive the world when placed in this situation, is there some confusion perhaps at the unnatural and disjointed existence that our oh-so-clever-scientists have placed it in. What gives us the right to do this. while our scientist stroke their egos our world falls apart..."
(Andrew Sprawson 6/26/2009 3:21:33 AM)
"Fortigurn tells me that in Keith Laumer's 'A Plague of Demons', an alien species used the brains of other species they captured as control mechanisms for their mechanized warfare units. "
(Bill Christensen 6/29/2009 12:27:27 PM)
"I have been struggling to find a reference to cite. This entry from the 'Encyclopedia of Science Fiction' (John Clute and Peter Nicholls, London: Orbit, 1993), is the closest formal reference I can find:
'A Plague of Demons (1965), in which a tough human is biologically engineered into a sort of superman so that he deal with a threat to Earth and finds - after a long, remarkably sustained chase sequence ending in his capture by some singularly efficient aliens - that for centuries Earth has been being despoiled of its best fighting men, who, like himself, are taken off-planet and surgically transformed into command centres for gigantic armed fighting machines embroiled in an eons-long interstellar war. In this cyborg form, he regains autonomy, organizes a revolt of his fellow cyborg-supertanks, and prepares to carry - fabulously armed - his message of freedom to the stars.'
For an informal reference, try this:
'A good story about aliens covertly harvesting human brains. The protagonist tries to work against them, but they catch him and take his brain too. They are using the brains to run huge cyborg tanks in a war they're fighting across the galaxy. The protagonist breaks his conditioning, and leads a tank revolt against the aliens.'

"Sorry about the formatting in that last post, can you clean it up and add some line breaks?
(No problem! Bill)"
