Comments on Atomic Layer Deposition Like Wolverine's
This technique could also toughen other biomaterials. Like possibly an X-man's skeleton and claws? (Read
the complete story)
"'Wolverine's claws' are not all that outlandish, really. There's a real metal that's super-strong, never corrodes, and bonds directly to human bone.

"I just wonder what the actual strength of those created wires is, compared to example nanowires. Are they getting close to creating the space elevator using some other material than the proposed nanowires (which has major production issues)?"

"I rewrote this post for livescience.com to include the comments on amorphous metals; take a look at Can You Have Bones Like Wolverine's?"

"As far as using super-strong spider silk for space elevator cables, it's a pretty cool idea! I'm especially taken with the idea of a 'spinneret' in orbit extruding a thread to the surface. However, I don't know if this material stands up to carbon nanotubes. We need to know the tensile strength of both materials for a good comparison.
Take a look at this older article that offers a three-way comparison: Carbon Nanotube Fibers Tougher, Stronger Than Steel Or Spider Silk."
