Comments on What Should A Hybrid Sound Like?
If a car could make any sound, what sound should it make? (Read
the complete story)
"I was thinking about this story the other day, as I drove along in my Camry hybrid. I approached several bicyclists; my car was in stealth mode. I thought to myself "Ah, I've read about this problem on the internets. If only a vehicle had some sort of noise-making capability... something that you could switch on for just a second, to alert other people.
Oh, that's right - the horn."
(Bill Christensen 8/11/2008 9:46:50 PM) |
"this seems bonkers to me, people trying to synthesize intentional noise pollution because they're used to it ... maybe they can make the prius belch realistic exhaust fumes while they're at it"
( 8/12/2008 3:06:48 AM) |
"I agree this is a ridiculous response to a so far small problem. Bill is right, thats what horns are for. I know in riding my (relatively quiet) motorcycle I constantly beep the horn just to inform drivers that I am within their swerving range.
Its not to be rude or aggressive, its just a signal.
And I also agree that this could easily be modified and abused as a status symbol and create more noise pollution."

"Stu wrote in with an item from the Mote in God's Eye, the Niven/Pournelle classic. Human beings visit the Mote planet; here's how Moties do 'ground cars':
"There were three ground cars... as soon as they took their seats the drivers, who were Browns, whipped the cars away. The vehicles ran soundlessly, with a smooth feeling of power, and there was no jolt at all. The motors were in the hubs of the tall balloon tires...
The black streets were wide but very crowded, and the Moties drove like maniacs. Tiny vehicles passed each other in intricate curved paths with centimeters of clearance. The traffic was not quite silent. There was a steady low hum that might have been all the hundreds of motors sounding together, and sometimes a stream of high-pitched gibberish that might have been cursing.""

"I find the Jetsons noise acceptable."
(Everlasting Tusk 8/13/2008 5:59:23 PM) |
"Yeah, I vote "Jetsons". You'll have lots of people looking in the air. LOL"
(Joseph A Nickence 8/13/2008 6:18:28 PM) |
"Since everybody loves the Jetson's, here's the sound that the Jetson's car makes when it starts.
Jetson's car startup."
(Bill Christensen 8/13/2008 6:30:30 PM) |
"Heinlein's take on this in "Time Enough for Love" depicted a character in a replica Model T. With the car's racket frightening a kitten, the driver flipped a switch to silence the Shipstone-powered car.
I think the electric car world will be filled with simulacra technology bling, including the sound, vibrations and torque reactions from IC motors. "
(Rod 8/17/2008 8:07:30 PM) |
"I find this to be the most ludicrous thing. First it ignores the fact that any electric vehicle makes more noise that any bicycle and we aren't requiring them to mount noisemakers. I mean So what the driver doesn't hear the noise. As a resident of any area that motor-vehicles pass through I find that statement to be the most obnoxious I've heard in a long time. That's like stepping on someones foot and saying "It didn't hurt me...". It goes further to show how ridiculously self centered people are becoming. It is my proposal that we rethink this foolishness and look at it from the other side. Rather than mandating that all vehicles continue to make juvenile noises and noise pollution suppose we instead mandate that all vehicles irregardless of type or make cause less than 20-30 decibels of noise or be forbidden to operate on the publicly maintained roads. Then the "silent" approach of an electric vehicle can be heard in the absence of the cacophony that is considered "ordinary" and thus accepted by the public. Otherwise we may as well mandate that all vehicles on the road be equipped with a 100db siren and are required to operate it anytime the vehicle is in motion. "

"Rod - nice going! You were almost right. The quote is from Heinlein, but not from Time Enough for Love. See car sound tape for the answer."
(Bill Christensen 5/11/2009 5:57:04 PM) |
"I wrote in the other article, but I favor a monotone hum so that the doppler effect can be an additional clue to the car's speed.

"Hi, good post. I have been wondering about this issue,so thanks for posting."
(KrisBelucci 6/1/2009 4:54:31 PM) |
"Where did you take from such kind of information? Can you give me the source?"
(CrisBetewsky 7/6/2009 10:38:07 AM) |
"I agree this is rediculous. If we are going to require vehicles to make noise just put a 100db siren on it. Then when EVERY vehicle is pouring out 100db of racket and no one can hear anything these people should be satisfied. If they insist on "realistic" sounds I'd have to record my 3yr old plaing with his toy cars and play that back instead just to point out how rediculous the idea is. "
(VirtualGathis 2/22/2013 12:35:03 PM) |
"A more realistic solution would be to equip all "silent" vehicles with a proximity transmitter. Then those who are afraid of them could go buy a vest or headband that could buzz to indicate the direction it's coming from without punishing everyone with rediculous noises that should have been outlawed 30 years ago."
