Comments on Solar-Powered Fuel Cells Easy As Photosynthesis
Impressive discovery by MIT scientists may unlock the potential of fuel cells for homeowners. Prof. Nocera explains how it works in a video interview. (Read
the complete story)
"There was a guy in the news a year or so ago from New Jersey, I think. He'd built an all solar house with the "extra" energy being stored as hydrogen gas. It allowed him not only to power his house but also his car. I'll be the MIT boys read the article and copied the idea. "

"You're right; I think I'll do that story for tomorrow. I'm not sure what the difference is supposed to be, other than cost (the MIT method is supposed to be less expensive, and less dangerous to do)."
(Bill Christensen 8/4/2008 1:44:08 PM) |
"One would hope that there was refinement of technique over time.
However, I like having hydrogen gas available, with modifications ALL existing cars can burn it. We don't need to change to "fuel cell" technology. That can be done over decades. "

"Got it - see Solar-Hydrogen House Is Energy Independent."
(Bill Christensen 8/5/2008 7:48:05 PM) |
"although this is a good idea, I don't regard it as "revolutionary" I thought of doing this before reading this article for an advanced physics project. The main obstacle to overcome is finding a material besides platinum to use in the fuel cell which is VERY expensive. And as with any open thermodynamic system there will never be 100% efficiency, the fuel cell is used only to store the excess electrical energy into a chemical form. It is renewable, simple as well as practical. I also believe hydrogen gas burns very hot? "
