Specifically, the 'Crystal Ressonator' that supposedly shattered (or sublimated) solid rock - in front of witnesses.
Since 'sensible' folk declared him a humbug and con artist (that kept the same scam going on the same crowd for over a decade - not to mention his numerous, er, modern followers), I figure he might rate as pretty competent and solid 'Science Fiction'.
