The military is showing a greater interest in the value of simulation technology to prepare personnel for insurgencies. (Read the complete story)

"two words: Hari Seldon"

"I read Asimov's Foundation novels when I was in my late teens - what a great story. You're right; the psychohistorians did more with psychohistory and its principles than set up the Plan. They also explored countless possibilities."
(Bill Christensen 2/9/2008 7:07:54 AM)
"Tho they couldn't deal with individuals using psychohistory. One of Asimov's other stories, however, did deal with this: The Fixed Price War. (actually, it may have been the other short story about the same characters) In this one, war is handled by mercenary companies which must bid for the right to fight battles. One company, realizing that the wars they have been involved in merely traded territory back and forth so that both sides could feel some accomplishment, works out a deal with a similar company from the other side. Neither of them will do any "real" fighting, they'll just make computer (movie quality) simulations of the fighting, and trade them back and forth. This allows them to outbid more conventional companies, while making a huge profit. (and they can still use some of that profit to help in other battles if need be)"
