Comments on Circuit Smart Contact Lens, Presaged By Niven, Barnes and Vinge
Vernor Vinge called this one in his 2001 novella 'Fast Times at Fairmont High.' Larry Niven and Steven Barnes didn't do too badly, either. (Read the complete story)

"Wired magazine also ran an enjoyable 'Found: Artifacts from the future' art piece on the idea of smart contact lenses. I don't know if the artist Sean Hamilton Alexander had been reading Vinge or not.

(Vernor Vinge got there first
Art: Sean Hamilton Alexander)
"
(Bill Christensen 1/18/2008 6:45:36 AM)
"They're going to have to tackle the rotation issue. I've got wighted toric contact lenses for my astigmatism, and the focus will shift a teeny bit every time I blink, or the tear coat over my corneas changes even slightly such as when yawning or sneezing. If you can't picture what I'm saying, pick up your laptop or (hopefully) LCD display and rotate it back and forth about 10-15 degrees from level. That's what a contact lens HUD will look like if they can't figure out how to anchor the lens in place. If they implant the lens, I hope it's sufficiently advanced to not need frequent upgrades as technology marches on."
(AJ Dual 1/18/2008 8:02:04 PM)
"Yeah... in response to AJ, I know what you mean. I think they will have to come up with some kind of gyroscope on the nanoscale that can tell the screen what is level."
(Sigma 1/18/2008 10:41:11 PM)
"Considering that you can "see through" the lens' wiring because the wiring's image is so blurred out on your retina, I wonder how they plan on making a display on the lens that would not be similarly blurred out to uselessness?"
(Gene Battin 1/21/2008 7:14:50 PM)
"I believe that virtual reality contact lenses were (first?) mentioned in Niven's 'Dream Park - The Voodoo Game'... "Scleral lenses?" she asked. "You've got DreamTime technology in contact lenses? That's not available to the public! How—""
(Pete 1/22/2008 7:59:28 AM)
"I'll need to check the reference, but I assume you're right. Vinge also mentioned in his note to me that ' I bet there is prior sf'nal art on this!' "
(Bill Christensen 1/22/2008 10:22:15 AM)
"I've added an entry for DreamTime scleral contact lenses from the Niven/Barnes collaboration The California Voodoo Game. It turns out that scleral lenses might turn out to be be better for AJ and Sigma, who are worried about making sure they are oriented properly, because scleral lenses are larger and more rigid than today's contact lenses."
(Bill Christensen 1/22/2008 8:22:16 PM)
"Stabilisation of the image would be simple: Allow the lens to rotate, and add a simple accelerometer to determine 'down' and rotate the image on the lens to match."
( 1/31/2008 2:52:20 AM)
"it would have to be super-responsive. how would you see your hud clearly while jogging?"
( 5/3/2008 1:05:47 AM)
"all these questions i've read seem to be issues that were probally over come a long time ago. what i wanna know is when can i get some of these for my self?"
(sasuke R.A.H. 8/6/2008 12:03:53 AM)
"i dont think that thid whole is going to work out "
(renae 9/17/2008 7:03:58 AM)
"i dont think the lenses will work in my oppinion!"
(charlie 9/17/2008 7:07:06 AM)
"this type of lens is available to the public, just like most things that has to be tested and done inconspiculously, not everyone can become knowledgeable of this until something happens negatively in the process. ex. ever heard of the stevens and johnson syndrome?"
( a victim of dreamtime 4/2/2009 10:51:42 AM)
"incredible..."
(Viabbence 7/25/2009 12:54:23 AM)
"I somehow dont agree with a few things, but its great anyways."
(Custom House Foreign Exchange 12/18/2009 11:29:06 AM)
"Why not make a spectacle which have such feature?"
(GeneticZ 1/30/2010 12:40:59 AM)
"that POOR rabbit. wtf people?? this is disgusting. "
( 2/25/2010 2:25:23 PM)
"Animals are not ours to test on, assholes."
( 3/11/2010 7:30:51 PM)
"but war are they going to be used for.wat are you designing them to do????:)"
(Priscilla  3/22/2010 6:36:23 AM)
"DO NOT TEST ON ANIMALS!!"
( 7/7/2010 8:59:53 AM)
"They would be cool, especially if they could have a "zoom" feature. And for people that say not to test on animals, if we test on people that's better? Honestly Human's are just different species of animal. "
(coolage 7/8/2010 2:23:09 PM)
"when would these contacts be released to the public? is this something that will be affordable to everyone?"
( 9/11/2010 11:01:26 AM)
"This is a prototype device, but Parviz has added to his original research. Take a look at the Smart Contact Lens With Power Harvesting Circuits from the same engineering group."
(Bill Christensen 9/11/2010 11:24:30 AM)
"You people are idiots... Its not like they are harming them by putting contacts on them. Are you guys just stupid or can't understand whats going on. Contacts DONT hurt people. Therefore... Contacts won't hurt animals"
( 11/2/2010 12:48:05 PM)
"Contacts on animals? wtf?"
( 1/14/2011 5:51:04 PM)
"Are these real of fake??"
(Excess Meat 2/8/2011 10:10:52 AM)
"These are real prototype devices being researched; it's probably time to do a follow-up story though."
(Bill Christensen 2/8/2011 10:15:37 AM)
"As for "Contacts don't hurt people"...that is not the point. Have YOU ever had a contact lens forced into your eye?? It sucks. And NO ONE was able to explain to that rabbit what was being done to it. I promise you- it was in abject terror throughout that experiment...and that in itself is cruel. So are YOU stupid?? you smug asshole."
(MeatPie 7/4/2013 11:10:17 PM)
"And if its so "safe"why do you think they are puttin the damn thing on a rabbit? They're obviously worried it would damage a human. You CAN NOT justify cruelty to an animal, EVER. I wish someone would tie you up & assault YOU, you fu#king sociopath"
(MeatPie's Friend 7/4/2013 11:25:49 PM)
